Today is a good day to indulge myself.. to dream and hope upon a star. Well I didn't do that much in past but the wishes of childhood seem so sweet to me now in such a cynical and swirling world. If I could have my wishes granted what would I want to see happen in this country called Canada?
Well for a starter I don't think much of the media in this country so let's start there:
- I wish for a lot smaller CBC that is designed to serve the areas of Canada that commercial enterprises cannot or will not serve. A CBC that is given a mandate to serve Canadians and not elected politicians.
- I wish for an agency that is non-partisan and non-biased be created that Canadians can complain too and for which major broadcasters themselves 'pay for' to ensure balance and fairness in media reporting and broadcasting. If the MSM does not observe the fair recommendations of such an agency then the government can act according to the will of the people to squelch offending organizations and businesses that do not observe the ideals of balance and fairness.
- I wish that the MSM industry in Canada be opened up to a far greater level of foreign competition than we currently have and that an organization like News Corp., the parent Corp of Fox Broadcasting, be allowed to operate in Canada to balance the overwhelming left-wing bias of existing companies.
Now I can make some wishes in regards governments:
- I wish for an elected senate which happens every time there is a federal election with the ballot in each province marked with the corresponding number of candidates that each province would be allowed to have.
- I would abolish the 'job for life' that senators currently enjoy and make senators elected for fixed terms as in the US. Current senators would be bought our of their current seats and replaced with elected senators asap.
- I would make the senate a place of research, reflection and lastly a place of responsibility. Senators would produce research on issues of importance of the day for the benefit of the HOC to aid decisions in the lower house. The reflection would come as the senate would have some power to resolve major conflict or problems in the HOC (not sure of the mechanism yet but I'll try to get to that later). Lastly the responsibility comes from being elected and answerable to the public, annother way for citizens to have a say in how their country is run.
On the subject of political party's I wish for:
- No more patronage appointments. All jobs are filled via hiring committees or professionals that review candidates: period.
- Politicians have to sign a contract upon being elected that requires certain behaviour from them: no lying knowingly, responsibility to tell the truth, reveal corruption when known, and convey your loyalty first of all to the public which pays your salary.
I'll continue this list, check back later..
